Weather.com uses flookies

So today I visited weather.com because of Bug 292623, and saw my lovely adblock tab for EMBEDs in the top left, as usual for a flash that launches popups. When I checked it, I got something a lot more surprising than I thought I would.

http://ima.weather.com/web/common/flash/flookie.swf?flcommoption=flget

You may have seen on slashdot, New Technique for Tracking Web Site Visitors. I highly reccomend all users boycott Weather.com for using such an insidious technique, and use something else instead. If you want just a quick forcast, go to google and search for something like “weather 10101″, which will give you the weather for zip code 10101.

Flookies are not cool.

Good work, Alan.

I edit articles at the English Wikinews. I caught another one about Firefox, Firefox browser reaches fifty million downloads. The external link, “Get free Firefox Browser”, didn’t sound professional at all. Sounds like www.free-mozillafirefox.com or www.freefirefox.com, or any of the other trickery google ads. So, waving over the link, I see that it’s an SFX link for our good friend HiFlyer1. The diff page reveals this is the work of Alan J Franklin.

I have updated the link with a more professional title, and removed Alan’s credit (he didn’t write any of the nes article, just put his link in there) link.

CSS Image Maps

Frank Manno put up a great article explaining how to put together CSS image maps. The effect is similar to Flickr’s notes, only using CSS and XHTML instead of Flash. Very useful!
